This temple situated in Kerala amidst the Western Ghat Mountains Ranges of India is a pilgrim center dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. It stands amidst 18 hills. On a hilltop at an elevation of 1260 meters above the sea level is the Sabarimala Temple. Dense forests and mountains surround this region. It is believed that Ayyappa meditated in this place after overpowering the mighty demon, Mahishi.

This is the only place where pilgrims are seen going on a pilgrimage to a temple without any distinction in caste, creed, social status or position. People here move on chanting one mantra on Lord Ayyapa with a peaceful mind. Vehicle facility is available only up to Pampa, the holy river. From there on, devotees have to go along the four km path on a steep hill. Near the temple (East of the Sannidhanam) there is a place that is dedicated to Vavar, a Muslim and he was an Ayyappan associate popularly called Vavarunada

Only during the Mandalapooja (November 15 to December 26), Makaravilakku (January 15), Vishu (April 14) and the on the first of every Malayalam month, the temple is open for worship. Women except for the ones who are below six years and above sixty years are not allowed inside the temple for worship. Along the forest path that leads to Sabarimala no tigers are found during the pilgrimage period. Sabarimala Temple is said to be the most famous pilgrimage center in Kerala.
